WHO WE ARE
RAF Alliance is a new nonprofit organization created in May 2023 to formally address the importance of mental health in Black communities. Rain Akai formulated this Foundation to destigmatize conversations surrounding mental health, that is known to arise more prevalently within African and Caribbean communities. RAF Alliance aims to inclusively support everyone who identifies as Black in the Durham Region, and Greater Toronto Areas, and globally.

OUR VISION
RAF Alliance believes that art and creativity are essential to initiate social change. We at the RAF Alliance use various forms of art and expression to inspire and bring about social change; specifically focusing on destigmatizing mental health in Black communities while incorporating safe and inclusive frameworks.

Our Commitment
RAF Alliance, is committed to supporting Black women and their families who are equity-deserving, and of low-socioeconomic status by providing characteristics of the Ubuntu Philosophy.
Ubuntu Philosophy
'I Am Because We Are' A South African principle that includes the essential human virtues of compassion and humanity. In practice, Ubuntu means believing the common bonds within a group are more important than any individual arguments and divisions within it. Ubuntu promotes restorative justice and a community-centric ethos. We are all connected and we can only grow and progress through the growth and progression of others.
AFROCENTRISM
All programs are developed through a trauma-informed, Afrocentric, perspective and ethnic-specific lens.
INCLUSION
Inclusive support services that recognize fundamental Human Rights with respect to all exceptionalities, disabilities and complex needs with acceptance without biases.
CULTURALLY SAFE
Culturally safe resources that support individuals by drawing strength from their own identity and community.
ARTISTIC GROWTH
Advocating for economic opportunities and encouraging artistic growth and self development through skills training. Collaboration between RAF Alliance, and outside partnerships to create, professional and personal advancement.
UPCOMING EVENTS
3rd Annual La La Land Fundraising Gala
The La La Land Gala is more than an event, it is a movement. Our 3rd Annual Gala brings together leaders, advocates, creatives, and community members committed to one shared mission:
To reimagine mental health support for African, Caribbean, and underserved communities across Canada. This year’s gala is a call to action. A space where storytelling meets strategy. Where lived experience meets policy. Where healing is not whispered, but centred.
Why This Gala Matters
Mental health inequities are not accidental…they are systemic. For many in our communities, access to culturally safe, affirming care remains limited. Too many are navigating trauma, stigma, and silence without the support they deserve.
RAF Alliance exists to change that.
The La La Land Gala is our flagship fundraising event supporting programs that:
-
Expand access to culturally responsive mental health resources
-
Create safe spaces for healing and dialogue
-
Advocate for systemic change and equity in care
-
Uplift community-led solutions rooted in lived experience
This is not charity.
This is infrastructure for healing.
