Healing Is Not Linear: Giving Yourself Permission to Start Again
By Melissa Nyamushanya
There is a common misconception that healing follows a straight line.
That once we attend therapy, set boundaries, take medication, pray, meditate, or have a breakthrough conversation, everything should suddenly make sense.
But healing rarely works that way.
Healing is messy.
It is often two steps forward and one step back.
It is having a good week and then finding yourself struggling again.
It is learning a lesson and having to learn it again in a different season of life.
At RAF Alliance, we believe it is important to normalize this reality, especially within African, Caribbean, and Black communities where strength is often celebrated but vulnerability is misunderstood.
Many of us were taught to survive.
We learned how to push through.
We learned how to keep showing up for school, work, family, church, and community responsibilities, even when we were exhausted.
What we were not always taught was how to rest.
How to process grief.
How to ask for help.
How to acknowledge that healing is a lifelong journey.
The truth is that setbacks do not erase progress.
Having a difficult day does not mean you have failed.
Experiencing anxiety does not mean you are weak.
Returning to therapy does not mean it did not work the first time.
Starting over does not mean you are back at the beginning. It means you are continuing the work.
We know that many people carry invisible burdens. The loss of loved ones. Financial stress. Family expectations. Immigration experiences. Relationship challenges. Workplace discrimination. Trauma that has never been spoken about aloud.
These experiences do not disappear overnight.
Healing requires compassion.
Compassion for the version of yourself that did the best they could with the tools they had.
Compassion for the person you are becoming.
Compassion for the days when simply getting out of bed is an accomplishment.
At RAF Alliance, our mission is not to tell people to “get over it.”
Our mission is to create spaces where people can be honest about where they are.
Spaces where healing is not rushed.
Spaces where people are reminded that they are more than their pain.
Spaces where mental health conversations are met with understanding instead of judgment.
If you find yourself struggling today, consider this your reminder:
You are allowed to begin again.
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to ask for support.
You are allowed to heal at your own pace.
And most importantly, you are allowed to believe that your story is not over.
Healing is not linear.
But every step you take toward yourself still counts.
At RAF Alliance, we see you.
We believe in you.
And we are walking this journey together.
Because healing is not about perfection.
It is about progress, one day at a time.
