We Are RAF Alliance: Supporting Black Lives Before Crisis

By Melissa Nyamushanya

Why RAF Alliance Was Created

Too often, mental health systems respond to Black communities only when things have already fallen apart. Support is reactive, not preventive. Stories are pathologized instead of understood. Pain is criminalized instead of cared for. But the problem runs deeper.

Black people continue to face systemic discrimination within healthcare, including mental health services. Our concerns are dismissed. Our pain is minimized. We are more likely to be misdiagnosed, over-policed, or treated with suspicion rather than compassion. These experiences erode trust and push many people away from seeking care altogether. RAF Alliance was created to confront these realities honestly and unapologetically.

The Impact of Discrimination in Healthcare

Discrimination in healthcare is not just about individual bias; it is built into systems, policies, and practices.

For Black communities, this can look like:

  • Being labeled “aggressive” or “non-compliant” instead of being listened to

  • Receiving delayed, inadequate, or inappropriate mental health care

  • Having trauma dismissed or misunderstood due to racial stereotypes

  • Feeling unsafe or unseen in spaces meant to provide care and healing

These experiences cause real harm. They increase stress, worsen mental health outcomes, and reinforce the belief that help is not meant for us.

What We Mean by “Before Crisis”

“Before crisis” means addressing harm early before mistrust turns into isolation, and before unmet needs escalate into emergencies. We believe prevention includes rebuilding trust where it has been broken.

Why Representation and Lived Experience Matter

RAF Alliance is led by black people who understand these challenges firsthand. We know what it means to enter healthcare spaces and feel unheard, doubted, or dismissed. That lived experience shapes everything we do. We don’t believe in surface-level solutions. We believe in care that is informed, accountable, and rooted in community.
